Editors Note:
I have left this pretty much UN edited. I have been told it is a bit "too" personal, but I feel it is necessary to record how I feel, unedited. One of these days, I will go back and add to it, I know I left a few things out here and there. Also, the times some how got screwed up. There area also a lot of grammar and spelling mistakes. Any that know me well, know that I can not spell. I will run the spell check on day…. May be…….
Saturday, January 18, 1997 Racine, WI Well, Becky and I are almost ready to fly off to Ireland. All of the preparations have been made, and are almost done packing. I have just got this laptop because I am not able to take the other computer I had with me due to size. All in all, I still have upgraded in computers. I now see my life coming together, computer and all. Now the big test of what we can do in the ring. Although I am a bit nervous, I know that we will do very well. I am not sure of what we will be able to do in the ring. With only three days and counting, I will end it here, in till I am able to come up with more to say! Monday, January 20, 1997 Racine, WI Almost there!. This time tomorrow we will be anxiously awaiting boarding our plane at Chicago's O'Hare Airport. With a few hour lay over in Atlanta, and finally, our plane to Ireland will take off at 7:50 p.m. I feel like a kid awaiting Christmas! Final packing will be done as soon as I stop writing. When I board the plane to Ireland, the real journal will start. I might add, that the journal is inspired from another journal that was written by Jimmy Kernan. A true showman, with several years (who knows how many) of circus and carnival under his belt. From this man, I have learned allot. Especially Marquee erection. If my journal can only say half of what Jim's does, I have accomplished something. So Jim, if you ever get to read a piece of this, let me know what you think! With that my friends, I will close another entry of a journal that has not yet began. The countdown continues........ONLY 26 hours to go before we leave Wisconsin, The Cheese Head State!!!! Tuesday, January 21, 1997 Racine, Wisconsin Our final morning in the states. This time tomorrow, We will be in the country of Ireland. Our trunks are packed to the gills, and we are still trying to figure how to pack a few items. We have (or I have any way) ran out of room more than once. I know that we will get it all packed some how. Little more than two hours in till we leave this cold, frozen tundra, for the dampness of Ireland. The countdown dwindles.....
4:15 PM IN THE AIR!!!! Well, We have finally made our first flight. Heading toward Atlanta, cruising above the earth at 45000 feet. Take off was delayed by fog, but we will only be delayed about 5 minutes in landing. the view from the plane is nice, looking down on the clouds below. It is really hard to believe this is really happening! this time tomorrow we will be settling down for our first night in winter quarters in Ireland. I will continue once we get in the air from Atlanta. The countdown ends, the trip has started! Wednesday, January 22, 1997 Tom Duffy Circus, Winter Quarters Aherla Co. Cork Ireland The time has come! We landed this morning at 8:15, in Dublin and had no problems going through customs. Bill Johnson, the show's PR man, met us. Some how we knew who each other was immediately. Our transportation to winter quarters was supplied by a little red truck, which would surely make a wonderful comedy car act. In fact, almost all the cars I seen would make a great clown car! We had about a 150-mile drive to winter quarters. After going through the town of Dublin, with all of its big city glory, I noticed that the same charm that this city had, could be seen in just about every city. In Dublin though, we even seen horse drawn wagons. Bill explained about the gypsies, or as they call them Tinkers, or minks. It was a wonderful experience. We stopped for lunch at Irelands equivalent to America's fast food joints. The food had the same tastes, but the fries, err "chips" were cooked with precise accuracy. Quite surprising! During our journey to winter quarters we past a few castles. A few were in great condition, and a few were in runes. Bill explained that we had tobers (lots) on castle grounds. When we arrived at winter quarters, we caught up with Bill's wife Jennifer. (She can make a mean cup of coffee!) While we were sipping our coffee, Tom Duffy dropped in to greet us, and asked us a few questions like: "What kind of license to drive do you have, what can you drive?" I knew right then, I was on a circus! I was home at last. Becky feels the same way. To wind things up a bit, our caravan is about 16 foot, a chemical dump your-self donniker, no shower, fridge, hot water, or furnace. We are so happy to be here! we really don't care. Making due with what we have is what us circus people do best! Our van is cool, with a clown alley inside, enough room to stand in. All in all, more than I had on Hendricks in a way. Been a long day, and we are looking forward to sleep. goodnight all.
Thursday, January 23, 1997 Winter Quarters What a wonderful day! Becky and I started some what later than we wanted. Jet lag helped us to sleep to 1:00. After warming up instant coffee (fresh brewed coffee is a commodity) and tea for Becky, we ventured outside. We were not out for long before David was asking us what we were capable of, and the style of our humor. And that is when we were told that we would be performing Saturday. We were given a sub-trunk, and a box inside a box illusion to work with. Becky and I ran through both of them quickly. We ventured out to the town, consisting of a little store, two pubs, post office and phone booth.. The store had just about everything you might need. Food, electrical plugs, propane, and several small items that can make life easy for the Irish. Every one was very friendly, and all knew who we were. news of American Clowns travels fast here. When we returned back to winter quarters, we worked on our story line for our little magic show, and practiced the tech side of things. And for the first time, Becky and I worked on something, and we did not get frustrated with each other. Just showing us that it will take time for us to learn how to work together. And we will. Time for dinner! 24 January 1997 Winter Quarters 10:54 PM I really think I will enjoy this journal. Of course, it may start out strong, and loose it a few weeks into the season. I will try my best to keep it up though. Today was a busy day! Becky and I started around 8:00, coffee, smoke, and off to practice our illusion gag. We're getting better! At 10:30, we were off in costume to promote Sundays show in Morrow? The area's downtown was wonderful. I was taken by all the shops, side streets filled with street venders selling clothes, boots(I got a pair), and tools. There were several cafes, and butcher shops with tempting pork chops! Clothing and furniture shops, little markets, and people. In America, downtown's are slow in a small town. Here they were bursting with people. I might like to add that we were there to hand out vouchers, or coupons for one pound off admission. Unlike the states, the show depends on gate admissions, not concessions. (eat your heart out Jewels!) All in all, I loved the downtown area, and the Irish are wonderful people. When we got back to winter quarters, our new caravan was ready for us. (They found the key) The one we were staying in was only ten-foot, and a temp. They brought another one in for us, but it had no electric. David surprised us yesterday with the one we have now. It is roughly 18 foot, two tables, both folding down to beds, Heater, fridge, and no water pump. (we can add one). Now, how David surprised us: David: Well, I got some bad news, and some good news. Actually, two things of good news, no, three.... Me: Well, what's the bad news? David: We don't have a key Becky: Key? David: You should have asked the good news first, Optimistic though, that's good. Becky: He's right Doug, you should have asked the good news first Me: O.K. what's the good news? David: we have another Caravan for you, with jacks, and electric. Bigger as well. Becky: See, you should have asked the good news... After dinner we stopped by Dave's trailer, visiting with his wife Stephanie, and sons Tom and Jamie. We just talked about what we would do for the show. He seamed rather happy about the Magic trunk. who knows... we might have the chance to do it in the ring! And that's all for now. Tonight is Bath night, and our first shows are tomorrow. First show with Becky, first with magic, first in-doors, and first in Ireland.. We will know tomorrow! Saturday, 25 January, 1997 Winter Quarters 10:43 PM
And the indoor season begins... Today came early, about 8:30, about an hour later than we wanted to. but all went well in our first town. Of course, our first show was nothing to brag about, but our second was a bit smoother. Not the best, but allot smoother. And in that second show, something wonderful happened to me! For the first time, I owned the ring. Not the ringmaster, not anyone, but me. The feeling is incredible! Thanks Janice..... Thank-you. We also took Happy back to the ring with us. All in all, it was a great day! I guess you might like to know a little about our winter season. Our ringmaster is David Duffy, with his wife doing the music tapes. David so far is the best ringmaster I have ever worked with. His ad-lib and improve is an excellent benefit to work around. His wife Stephanie (who also does web that I have not seen) was like "just tell me how you want your music, and where to switch it. INCREDIBLE! Tommy Chiperfield and his wife Marilyn do horses, llama, goats, snakes, dogs, and ponies. Also very good showmen. And then comes Domingo, another clown. Now this guy is incredible! I will mention more of his acts later. (he also does single trap). Bill and Jennifer helped with props. This show also has a Jimmy, and old guy who used to clown. As I get to know him, I will be telling more, As well as everything else that happens. Like being Conan with the Electric plug. I was told not to touch it again.. Eat your heart out Dan...goodnight.. PACKERS #1
They even made front page in Ireland! Packers won the Superbowl yesterday. Our hometown state's football team went all the way this year! But I am sure who ever is reading this really wants to know about Ireland, and boy, if I could only remember it all..... Last night, after two shows, one being almost a full house, but the second letting us down in Mallow, Becky and I went to have a go at a pub. Hickey's, up the lane from us was a neat little pub, but positively the best beer I have ever had. Beemish as it was called, was smooth! But even better than the beer, were the people. Live music, consisting of two accordion players, one drummer, and any patron that wants to sing. Being in that pub last night makes one realize what the Irish really do stand for, not only in the pubs, but reflected every where, and that is to enjoy life. I went with my cowboy hat on, and my denim jacket. People called me every thing from Tex., John Wane, and Garth Brooks. It was just plain fun. (two drinks was my limit) Today, we went to Cork, getting regular household items. Cork is interesting, to say the least. Becky and I planned to take a bus in, but were offered rides from a local couple. (that's what I mean, the people are so nice!) Every side street is filled with little shops, pubs, and restaurants. We only had three hours to spend there, but it was a fun three hours! The mall was about in the center, and very much like a small American mall. We finished up our day by getting the jacks town on the trailer, putting in a foot pump for water, and moving in. dinner, journal, and soon, bed. Tomorrow will be another exciting day.... January 28, 1997 Winter Quarters 10:13 PM We had a busy day today. Becky went with Jennifer, and I went with Bill to paper a few towns for the weekend. Not only that, I have started driving as well. First, Papering was easy, the first town we papered was Mallow and it had the remains of a castle there. I. I would have loved to have the time to explore more, but work presided. The second town I went to was Blarney, Home to the famous Blarney Castle. the people here were very friendly, and helpful. Unlike America, it did not seam like a tourist trap, refreshing after spending so much time in Orlando. I even met some tourists from Mass. felt funny to say I live here now. But them being from New England, I had to rag on them about Greenbay Winning the Super Bowl. He did say it was a great game. Yesterday, Tom Duffy took me on my first Lorry driving test. I think he was too nervous to have me drive, so that did not last long. I made sure it was known that I want to learn. I hope that I will have the opportunity. Tomorrow, I am doing some school stuff, and I understand I get to ride a ferry.. Should be interesting!!!! January 31, 1997 Winter Quarters 12:51 PM We went to Cobh (pronounced Cove) to bill for next weekend. Cobh is a little seaside town that is really neat. Almost like an New England coastal town, but here, a flavor all of it's own. Bill explained that in the bay, there was a distillery, a juvenile prison, and a navel base. and the outlet to the sea was just below the islands that held the named operations. The ferry service to Cobh was very efficient, docking and unloading took about 3 minutes. You could say I was impressed. I went to a few schools while I was there, and one I had the opportunity to go class to class. They all were enthralled with my shoes, and my pronoucation of Cobh. Another school that I went to was a girl's school, just at the start of recess. The children surrounded me, but none of them got to close, as if I was oddity, curious, friendly, but not quite brave enough to complete trust this clown. But they were all smiles...... Part of this journal is to help remember stories that were told to us, and I have that was heart warming from Bill... A few years back, on a weekend when shows are earlier, Bill had noticed a taxi pull up, and an elderly couple get out. Unfortunate, the shows were over for the day, and Bill, knowing hat most the Irish don't have much if any, disposable income, thank them for coming and apologized that the shows were over for the day. While thanking them, he gave them two free passes for the next day. The next year, he recognized the man, but sadly was informed that the lady had passed on. The man said he was with her when she passed, saying with her finale breath: " I hope that the circus lives on, that man was so nice to us" To those that don't understand, or can't comprehend why I love this life so much, Part of it is the rewards that we get from our audience can't be priced, but the memories live on with on us. Next time: Duffy the Teddy Bear..... 01 February 1997 Winter Quarters 9:59 PM
And the sun shown, well for a few minutes I have got to get better at remembering the names of the towns that we go to. It might help if I could pronounce them! For me to try and spell them... Our first show was a straw house. Becky and I's timing a bit better, and things are going well to say the least. Every audience that we play has it's own charm. Just about every night Becky and I have walked up to the little store (they call them shops) to pick up dinner, cigarettes, or what ever we may need. It is an older couple that owns it, but they are so nice! For us, it is nice to go for that walk, looking forward to the warmth and Friendliness that has become rare in the states. And they always have a fire going. It reminds me of what BK had once said... The only people that are strangers to me are people that I have not met yet. Well BK, the Irish live by that! And as promised, the Duffy The Teddy Bear Yesterday, I overheard a shop owner chatting with Becky as we were putting up posters. She was saying when her son was 7 or 8 they went to our show, and brought a raffle ticket for a stuffed animal. And out of all the people that were there, here fella won. That bear that was won was named Duffy, and sits on the edge of the fella's bed. He is 19 now. For tomorrow, Beck's a fat cow? Goodnight. 3 February, 1997 Winter Quarters 10:21 PM We made it to full time employ of Tom Duffy's Circus THE PREMIERE CIRCUS. Although we have only been doing building shows on the weekends, we have also been posting bills in the towns. Today we started posting for our opening city, Cork. we will open on the 18th of this month, and close on the 2nd of March, and our main season will be off to a grand start. Not only were we billing in Cork, but clowning as well. We both prefer the ring, but we know that a good start for a season in important. At least were on full wages. That will help allot. Cork is a nice size city, with nice cafe's and coffeehouses among the shops. And there are shops of every sort. From hardware, kitchen, linen, computers, and pound shops. (Just like our dollar stores). And the best parts are the thrift shops. I found a tea pot that I talked them down to 50 pence, a blanket for a quid, and even talked a computer store down a quid on a much needed power cable for this laptop. If you're confused, a pound, or quid is their dollar and a pence is a cent. Remember that, because I will use both terms, just like the Irish do. Takes a while get it right. Tomorrow we will continue billing Cork, and will be posting for quite a while. Yesterdays shows in Grenaugh (Grena if your American and can't speak Irish) were not full houses, but attentive and warm. Becky and I have started a new come in where we pick out a male from the crowd, and make him up as a quick clown. And then we do the which side is louder contest, and his side always win. It goes over well! And now for tonight's story, Becky a Fat Cow? Saturdays show Becky was in the Illusion Double box and over heard Dave muter out "Fat Cow" as he and another carried out the illusion to the ring. Later that night, after unloading the animals, walking up from the lower shop, Becky got brave and asked Dave about the comment. Went something like this Becky: You know, as I was being carried to the ring I heard a comment about a "fat cow" was that directed to me? Dave: Yes Doug: snicker Becky: I thought so... But I am not sure if I should be offended.. Dave: Oh no, the comments get much worse than that... Finishing up, last night Becky and I barley made it to the pub last night. But when we got there, every one was waiting to see what balloons I would do that night. The day before, the bar lady asked when we were going o come back in, so we knew we were expected. I almost felt like Norm in Cheers... And that my friends is life at winter quarters. Stay tuned, I am sure that there will be many more stories. Good Night. 5 February, 1997 Winter Quarters 9:39 PM
THE WAR IS ON! Courtney's Giant American Circus trying to move in All week so far we have been billing Cork and surrounding areas for our opening on the 18th. The Courtney's are trying to move in on us, making it difficult. To give a small bit of history, The rivalry between circus in this country is incredible. There are 3 families: Duffys, Fossets, and the Courtney's. Duffys of course is the oldest circus in Europe, and had the most reputable name in Circus here. Fossets are next in line, but the Courtney's are not known for there showmanship. Things like not paying for lots, and making the priest angry, not paying performers etc. is what we're up agenst. Several years ago Duffys had a tent fire on a brand new tent, not destroying it, but sufficient damage was sustained. (I forgot to mention there is more than one Courtney show, on one a better reputation). One of the Courtney's shows was very close to our Tober, with in a stones throw away. All the shows in Ireland, and a good portion in the UK came to the Duffy's rescue, with only one exception. The Courtney Show. No formal charges have ever been made. Back to the Courtney's making it difficult, Balencoly just down the road from us, between here and Cork, is billed with The Giant American Show posters, wrapped around poles (illegal in this country) and a few in windows. Tomorrow, I think that Becky and I are postering Balencoly in Joey. And we will make a big deal about being the only American performers in Ireland.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE
"General Johnson" just came to clown battalion headquarters to inform us that Balencoly is well posted. Orders are to infiltrate area with our bills and inform the public that the Giant American Circus is really Courtney from County Wexford. Becky will take to private abodes and slip 2 pound off vouchers through mail slots. Mission will begin @ 09:00 hours. This is Private ?class Poindexter...... A few more notes about today and Private? class? Poindexter has to get some shuteye... While I have been out posting in "civi's" I have been toped with my cowboy hat. I had a little boy come up and ask me if I was a cowboy, and if I was from America. After I exclaimed yes to both, a loud KEWL could be heard. A few ladies in a jewelry nic-nac shop thought I was Garth Brooks and JR. Euing from Dallas, and wondered how I could stand up riding bareback. (Bill asked me after leaving that shop if I understood what they were saying, I said no, he told me that they were asking me about the bareback riding) that's all for now. Goodnight. 6 February, 1997 Winter Quarters 6:41 PM
Bill Posters Clash at the front in Bellincollig Billing today was interesting to say the least! I never knew this could be such an adventure! While Becky went out to the houses to slip the 2 pound vouchers in mail slots, Jennifer and I went and postered the town. After about 45 minutes, the Courtney Posters arrived. A dirty look was all I thought that we would be getting. WRONG! Jennifer and I hopscotched store to store, meeting Becky at the van. Jennifer called in to learn that the town's people had called to ask why our posters were being taken down. The war started. After learning this, I had suited back up to repast, when another town's person had approached the van, asking if our posters were to be taken down. Jennifer got out to talk to her, then the Courtney crew arrived, coming to my door shouting, demanding which one of us little fuCENCOREDers had taken down there posters. Several more colorful insults inspired both Becky and I. as I got out of the van, Jennifer came around the van, got a little shove by a Courtney. More colorful insults, as well as threats came from this non-showmen beret. One even tried to take off my nose (clown nose) with a flick of a finger. The rest of it was just shouts, and hand gestures. Reports were made to the Garda by Garda, Liam Woods, 21866K. The Garda was helpful, and seemly on our side. The town's people were also very supportive of the Duffys. We wanted to go back to old show.... And never knew how far back we would go! This is more of an adventure than we bargained for, but we are committed as show people to stick by our show, no mater what! And it looks as if Becky and I might have a day to get our stuff in the van arranged, and a few props built, but it is a early bed for us... were pooped! Goodnight! 10 February 1997 The lane to/from Winter Quarters 8:16 PM
Our First Jump? If you are wondering why there is a gap in days, there two reasons. 1st not much has been happening, 2nd I have had a small cold, and trying to get as much sleep as possible. We have been busy with the last of the building shows this weekend, and spent today billing in a mall. Funny, So many things we take for granted, like hangers, are impossible to find, and expensive if you do find em'. Or there are easy to find, and free if you know where to look! The first two clothing shops and first dry cleaner we went to post, I asked about hangers. And I got some. Bags full! They just throw them away! It seams like I have a knack for getting the needed things cheep.. (I think it is my American accent.) Our first jump? It was right up the road. We were going to leave today, but with the weather today, it held the show back. When we will move, I don't know. I have to mention a few people. I know I have mentioned the people at the "shop" but not knowing their names. Or the name of the shop. I got the whole address... The Owners of the shop are Ted and Catherine O'Malony. And it is "The Shop" See, there has never been a name for this little store. It is known as the "The shop" The joke is The Shop on Main Street, Aherla. Aherla has a post office, phone booth, The Shop, and two pubs. Speaking of pubs, I will tell you of Hickeys next time. After I tell you the events of today, I will wrap it up. Becky and I went into Cork, on our own, in the "Duffy Dozer" (The van that we have been given to use is a tank, and no power steering, has been named) After finding the area that we were to post, and even harder, finding a parking place, We met up with Bill and Jen on a street corner, with poring down rain, hail and snow, it was decided to try a mall instead. O.K., back in the Duffy Dozer, and back up this rejected Sherman tank and fight our way through Cork. To make a long story short, we had great potential to get lost twice, and twice we found our way! I might add that tonight I am graced with sound, no not of Becky yelling at me, but of RADIO! yes, that's right, Becky and I have decided to break our insanity. We now have other ways to amuse our self, making faces at watch other has taken its toll. With all that, I will settle down for the night, listening to the howling wind, and pounding rain, remembering the beautiful rainbows we seen today. Goodnight! 12 February, 1997 Winter Quarters
12:18 AM
And the show moves on... The show has moved on to the tober in Cork. Becky and I will catch up to them tomorrow, and our caravan sometime in the afternoon and we are the advance team!!! Courtney show has moved on to the tober in Balencollig, but does not know if they will be playing there.. We will keep you posted. On another note, They say and have posted for a lot close to ours in Douglas. Their posters look almost exactly like our pasted on locations. (The reason for it being posted is that our posters are made in Italy, and we can't find a printer that can accommodate them for location printing.) So, the war continues..... I am so very tired. Bill and I have loaded posters and vouchers all day! So, goodnight!
15 February 1997 Cork Showgrounds 7:33 PM Becky and I have been so busy! Sense we have gotten to the show grounds, Almost every minute has been very active. We have been billing, putting up boards, clowning while handing out vouchers at malls. That reminds me, Valentines Day, we were vouchering a mall in Douglas, a small suburb of Cork. I got into complete careture as the tramp, and did my usual bum like attitude. Girls that worked in the local eatery we so taken by Poindexter, they brought him 3 red roses. It was a small token, but very heart warming gesture. The Irish have embraced me, beyond all of my expectations. And one of my dreams has come true... I am writing in the big top. I have dreamed a long time to have a laptop to write anywhere.. And here I am..... 19 February, 1997 Cork Showgrounds 11:44 PM
AND WE'RE OPEN Last night was the opening of the 1997 edition of Tom Duffy's Circus. The first show was well, less than to be desired. The genny gave out right after washerwomen, Becky and I right in the middle of changing costumes. And right after we had a little light, a clown call was called. Our dead or alive failed miserably (wrong music as well). Anything that could go wrong did. The weather was wind gusts up to 80 mph. In fact, today's weather was worse! The tent was held strong, and the only thing that was done, as a precaution was the animal tent was dropped. Today's shows were much better; every thing ran much smoother. We took out Dead or Alive and replaced it with the chair, but were told it needs work. In the states, it would have been fine. But here, they only want the best. In the states I was almost first rate. Now, I am feeling second best. Makes me work that much harder to be the best. And this is the show to do it on. David will do all he can to help us two out. Help us learn. I see the possibilities. Becky and I will work our hardest to be the best. The second show was allot better, chair and washerwomen were almost perfect! Gave us allot of confidence. Sorry, but very tired, and need to empty the donniker. Goodnight! 20 February, 1997 Cork Showgrounds 10:56 PM I apologize for that last entry. We have been very busy it seams, and learning how to budget our time is not easy. Becky and I have been busy, assuming that our advance team has work for us to do. Most of the time we have had less to do, but no one tells us we're done. We are getting the idea when we have some time to get what we need done. I can hardly wait in till Becky and I have full use of Wilma (Also known as the Duffy Dozer) and with the show full time. Now we are kinda in limbo because we're part of the advance team. We are working on getting the doctor gag together, finding props in the strangest places. Yesterday, while Becky and I were out getting some printing done, we came accrossed a Dumpster with a cleaning device. I am assuming it was to clean carpets. It has hoses, knobs, switches, and wheels. Another quality Poindexter Prop. Also while we were out, We found a little shoe shop in a market like place. Becky got her shoes resoled for 10 pounds. And the work was first rate. Speaking of Becky, she is now officially a circus clown... She lost her nose in the ring during washerwomen. I think though, the hilight of the day was getting a portable donkey. Now I can go anywhere!!! Tomorrow is another Circus Day, cause all of our days are Circus Days. And now that I am with a show that uses sawdust in the ring, the Circus feels that much more real, and reminds me of how I imagine Circuses used to be. Goodnight. 21 February, 1997 Cork Showgrounds 11:36 PM Two things to remember when you're a circus clown, or just a clown in general, you're very vulnerable, and our dignity is at stake. Becky and I have embraced our ring, held it and own it. The feeling that you get when you own that ring is incredible. In a few short days, we will head off and do advance for a spell. Meaning for three or more weeks we will be promoting the show, and our ring will be shopping malls and grocery stores. Not the same, especially when it is in and out quickly. When I am in that ring, It is a great feeling to protect my vulnerability, and to have my dignity challenged, but when your stuck doing something like advance, it is loved because it is your show, but hated because you lose your ring time. Today, David helped us on our chair gag, and gave us some helpful hints for falls. It worked very well, but our chair is started to fall apart. Makes me wonder how many hours I will play Mr. Fix It, before I break down and buy a new one. Our crowds were wonderful, our five o'clock being light. We were getting more laughs from our chair gag, and for washer women, as I was coming into the ring, I was greeted to a youngster not more than two wandering close to the back of the ring. In tramp face, and in drag, I set down my buckets, and started dancing with this child. At an age where they tend to be scared of clowns, he eagerly took my hands, and looked up at me and smiled, dancing with me. When I left him to continue in to the ring, he followed. I can only imagine his disappointment when he led out of the ring with the assistance of a ring boy. And during the intermission of the second show, I noticed a mentally handicapped young man, with a big smile, watching intently the action in the ring. At the blow off, I handed him a voucher, and then he tried to take my stack of them. Realizing it was wrong, he gave me a hug. Later I was told of the huge smile he had. Although us circus clowns are underpaid by most standards, how can you put a price on the spotlight you share with people everyday? Three shows tomorrow.... Goodnight. 22 February, 1997 Cork Showgrounds 11:14PM A three show day. The first time I have done 3 shows, and all of them were good houses. I know a good part of it is the hard work of the billing team, talking up the show, and getting them excited. The sad part about the billing team is that half of the team rather be in the ring. Tomorrow, we will be on a three-week stint of advance. I know we will have two weeks back with the show, but after that, makes me nervous. I have a bad feeling that we might have to go out and do advance again. It is all scary, loving the ring, wanting to help out your show. But how much can a couple take before they know they are only here to do advance? time, will only tell....
23 February, 1997 Cork Showgrounds 10:12 PM
And we are on the show full time! The news was handed to us today, of what we will be doing on the show, and that we are not going on the advance. To Becky and I that is a relief. There have been shows before that will say one thing, but have you do another. So far, Duffy's has not been one of them. As you can tell from some of my entries, I was not sure. A great big burden has been lifted off our shoulders, and we will do every one proud! Mornings will be promotion in Joey, with a few hours in the afternoon to ourselves, then the show. Not like the shows in America, where we would have a lot more time. During WasherWoman the first show, I lost my balloon butt. But we recovered nicely with a front flop on my chest, leaving me with one breast. (Yes, mom, I dress in drag). That gag is a lot of fun, and it never goes of the same way twice. Our chair is even getting better. I wonder what tomorrow will bring??? At the end of each show, David says "Thank-you on behalf of all of our performers, staff, and animals." The audience applauds, and it gives me a feeling of accomplishment. I know that applauding is partly for me. After our gags, we get a great round of applauds, that is only for me and Becky, but something about that finale applauding... February 24, 1997 Cork Showgrounds 11:28 PM
Another day is about to pass, and two tired clowns will go and dream of sounds of belly laughter. It is the sound of delightful screams, and the OH's and ah's that can only be heard in the big top. When we do washerwoman, the OH's and ahs get louder. With each slap of the wet cloth, the response becomes incredible inspiration to get it louder, making the audience get wilder with each belly laugh. It all pays off.... Today, while re-postering a shop, I asked a lady who had already been to the show, her favorite part. It was me, in drag. Out of the 7 countries we have represented at the show, it was an American classic. Oh, what a feeling! I just realized, that washerwomen has one of the biggest response in the show. When I first did that act on Hendricks, we had show staff running into the tent to see what was causing the commotion. Jimmy Kernan said it was a sound that the tent had not heard in a long time... the sound of laughter. The gift that I have been given to make people laugh is a most precious gift. Good night. February 27, 1997 Cork Showgrounds 12:46 AM It has been busy, that's why I have not made an entry in two days. And each day I had something to write about! I will start with the troupe of elderly ladies that were at the show two days ago. There were about 5 or 6 of them, sitting in the side grandstands. My tramp got into their hearts quickly, with his rose for a kiss. During the intermission, they wanted a free balloon, but the tramp decided to bargain for a bag of candy. But it was washerwoman that made it! During our chase, I ran straight for them! And as I was running to them, they were cheering me on, as if to say come here, us old ladies stick together! We'll protect you!! I never knew Gurt had so many bodyguards! Yesterday, We were whisked off to Kilarny, for a reception party to help kick off the Roaring Twenties Festival that Duffy's have played for 4 years. Becky and I were the hit of the party, with Poindexter the chareture being himself. With looks so close to Chaplain, and the theme of the Fest, it went over well... So well in fact, that I had to be in Joey at 9 am for a photo shoot around the town. The hopes are that I will be the cover for the roaring 20's fest magazine. But even better than all that, was the bed and breakfast we stayed at! The bathtub was huge! And hot water!!! Shower!!! We took a shower before we joeyed up, bath before bed, and another shower this morning. The joy of a hot shower.... I almost forgot what they were like. But I am really tired, been a long day, and tomorrow will just as long. Goodnight! Cork Showgrounds March 7, 1997 12:46 AM We have been so busy! That is why this is the first entry in over a week. Our day is spent putting up bills (or checking to make sure there up) Vouchering, and causing a stir in the towns we are going to next. Bandon is Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are Macroom, and then Kilarny. The early part of this week was spent vouchering Merchants Quey, Macroom, and yesterday and today we were in Bandon. We even did a radio interview today at 103 FM Wilma is almost ours. Becky and I have taken out a large shelf/table that was in the way right in the middle, Put in some carpet, and a table. As soon as Tom Duffy's car is fixed, and they stop borrowing the van, we just might have a clown alley. Keeping our fingers crossed. I had another lesson in the lourie. I am driving Monday morning to the next tober in Bandon. That should be fun. Very tired, goodnight. March 10, 1997 Brandon 12:46 AM Our first jump went with out problems. I drove the lourie, and Becky drove Wilma and our caravan. After we arrived, is when our problem started. We had a devil of a time getting the caravan unhooked from Wilma. After putzing with that for half-hour or better, Becky and I went on our way to board the town. We got one section done, back to the lot, change, and Tom Borrowed the van. Ooops, he is back! March 13, 1997 Macroom 12:46 AM How time flies!!! In Brandon, we got a dog. Kinda a Jack Russell mix. He seems intelligent, smart, but very hungry. He will eat us out of home if he could! We named him Brandon Joey Duffy. Brown and white, and small. But he's a good dog. He barked at Becky the other day on the way to Macroom, because she was not paying him enough attention. Go figure.. Macroom is a strange town, filled with rude kids, and rude adults as well. But tomorrow we will be on our way to Kilarny. As soon as I have a chance, I will tell about our jobs with Duffys, and the new gag we are doing. 1/16/99 12:46 AM Killarney We are on day 3 of a four-day stand. And our jobs? The days that we move we put up arrows for the public to follow to the show, and we take them down as well. We also hand out vouchers a few? Hours a day. A few school shows as well. We have little time to ourselves, but if we get quicker at the boards, we will have more time.... It is like we have 3 bosses, and each one has there own ideas on how to do something. Trying to please all three is hard to do at times...Time to go into the tent.... Tralie 12:46 AM We are on day 3 of a 4 day stand. The tober is a tennis court area, with a sports center next to it. HOT SHOWERS!!!!! That is nice. Becky and I had a chance to practice our magic trunk in the tent yesterday, and it felt wonderful! Now that I have felt it in the tent, I want to do it in front of an audience. Combined with other gag ideas, I can see a whole story line, continuing through the whole show. I am keeping my hopes high, although it seams like my time and efforts for the show is for vouchering the town. Almost to the point that it seams my only worth is vouchering. Becky feels the same way. I wonder how I can change it so that I feel my importance more in the ring. Hopefully, Our time will come to be soon. Look out Emit, Poindexter and Beakers is on there way.... Somehow March 24, 1997 Listowel 12:46 AM Jimmy Kernan would be proud! On the days that we move, I am up at 5:00 am, almost ready to start the day. I might add though, even as I said I hated jumping to the next lot at night, I do think there are advantages to it, like sleep. Can't win them all. Jimmy, Becky and I and Mrs. Duffy (affectionately called Mum by most) are waiting on the side of the road because the tober is on grass, and is quite difficult to get on. Another sleepless day for Becky and I. With boards to put up, a school show at 10:00 am, and horrific V word to pass out, combined with the difficult tober, sleep will not be accomplished in till after 11 or 12 tonight when all the shows are done. As for the V word? Voucher will not be mentioned in this journal again. Anything having to do with them will be referred to as V. But to prove that you can find good in everything, even V, I will confess that I actually enjoy V on Sunday mornings. All we do are the churches, and plenty of cars. Sundays mornings so far have been warm and sunny, making it possible to enjoy. Now if I could only find time to go into some of the churches we V, we would be all set. Most of the churches in this country are massive, not to mention old. And now for a bit of gossip. Kathy, our English tumbler, and Magicians assistant, was heard to be mooning the town of Tralie. After a hard night of pissing off (getting drunk) a few to many, brought out the full moon last Saturday night. Damingo still has not wiped off the but prints from his car window. I wonder why..... Assuming the trucks will be arriving shortly, I think it might be wise to walk Bandon, and get ready for the long day ahead. GOOD MORNING IRELAND!!!! March 28, 1997 Charleville 12:46 AM Time to write has been sparse. Take this morning for example. We got up at 5:00 am (a time I only knew existed when I stayed up all night) in New Castle West. Drove to the tober here, and put up boards for about 2 hours and then had a really quick bite to eat, took Bandon for a run, and set up house. About ready to take a nap, Tom came up to say more boards need to be up. (I really thought I flashed the town really good) Out for another hour and a half, napped for only an hour, and out to V for an hour. Back in time to fix the electric plug on the caravan, make up, show, clean caravan, and dinner, and now, off to our last show tonight. Becky and I will race to see who can get to bed first. Sleep walking does not count. Now that the come in is done, we have almost 40 minutes before our first gag. We usually take this time to eat, clean, (a joke to even try) or repair costumes. Now that the first show starts at 4:30, not 5:00, we have a little more time in between shows. With any luck I will have a bit more time to write a little. (HA HA HA) As promised, our music and trash can gag is going well. Becky and I are introduced, we come out with a radio, asking if the audience wants a party. When we turn on the radio, the Spice Girls play "I Wanna Be" and we clap and dance around the ring, getting the audience going. Dave, the ringmaster comes in turning off our radio, and asks what we are doing. I tell him we are having a party, He says no party, and I ask him "Who gives you the authority?" I am the BOSS. I say, "You're the boss?" Yes, I am the boss, If you're the boss, who am I? You're Nobody. Oh, I am nobody. Yes your nobody. Oh, you have a great job. Yes I have what do you mean I have a great job? You're the boss over nobody. In a steam, he harshly tells us no noise here. After he leaves, we go to the other side of the ring, and turn it on again. He comes back in, madder, and takes the radio, turns it off, and I take it and turn it on, he turns it again. Saying, I thought I said no noise here? No, you said no noise over there! (I just started taking him by the collar and taking back to where he says no noise here) March 29, 1997 Charlaville? 12:46 AM Well, another day is under our belt. What I can't figure out though, if it is me, or the show that I am seemly unhappy with. I think part of it is due to the V. and part is lack of ring time, lack of interesting gags. Or lack of pay. 100 pounds is not much, and for the amount of wok, I wonder. Some thing is bringing me down a bit. Becky and I are not without problems as well. With her missing her soon to be x, and just not knowing if her guilt will ever go away, scares me to no end. I hope to enjoy Easter tomorrow, and at least enjoy one day without hassle. Where we will be is another mystery. I guess I will just have to wait and see. Goodnight. March 31, 1997 ?????? 12:46 AM Easter Morning Becky and I spent the entire morning putting boards in the town. The church here is massive, and there are a few good ruins of a castle, and abbey's. There is a ruins that you can see from the tober, but what it is I can't tell. Becky and I are going out after the show to take a look. And we are going to try to get up early n the morning to look as well. We will be tourions (cross between an idiot and a tourist) if it kills us. Speaking of Easter, It is bigger here than in the states. And for the first time sense I have been here, I really feel like part of the gang. Mrs. Duffy gave both Becky and I an Easter Egg. (Here it is a large Easter Egg, not a bunny like in the states. Then Marlin Chiperfield also gave a dark chocolate egg. With that, combining it with sunny days, a large grassy tober, and crowds almost good, It is an enjoyable circus life. To wind up our Easter Sunday, most of the show went to go see Circus IL Florilegio, an Italian Circus touring Ireland. The set up was gorgeous! Some of the wagons in the front were really beautiful, the tent was spectacular, and the inside was luxury. You could and would forget that it was a tent. It was set up almost like a theater. The show itself was nothing to brag about, but the whole thing was neat. Got to run, I am on next. April 1, 1997 Nenagh 12:46 AM
I was on next, all right! During the music gag last night, I broke my nose! I ran into a guideline for the wheel of death. I have really marred my right side of my face good to. I look like Scar Face now. I am not sure what I will do about make up today, but I will be in the ring. It is Circus tradition to continue in the ring, no mater what. (death or passing out is excused) It was difficult because I was bleeding badly. The hospital in Limerick was a joke! All they did was put on two plaster strips. (Here plaster strips are only band-aids.) But all was not lost; I talked the Doctor out of his Stethoscope for the doctor gag. The hospital reminded me of the hospitals you see in the old movies, cold, dark, and dreary. Now I can understand why the healthcare in the states is so expensive. And now I believe it is worth every penny. At least I know that I will be taken care of! I have to take Becky and Kathy into town to V. I am excused because of my looks. The lengths I go to get a clown prop! April 3, 1997 Roscrea 12:46 AM My nose is still broken, and I am in a bit of discomfort. There is not much I can do at this point. I am still doing the shows, but I am wearing as little make up as possible. The scary thing is though, is the ring. I am afraid to totally let go. I never thought I would see a day where I am like that scared of the ring. I know this is part of my healing. The very ring I love is the very ring that could hurt or even kill me. I was lucky; I could have been caught in the neck. On to better news... Becky and I had a chance to go see a castle yesterday! I loved it. I will try and tell more about it later, but I have lights to fix on Wilma. April 8, 1997 Birr 12:46 AM
Coffee Maker! Last Saturday, in Port Laoise, Becky and I got tired (Mainly me) of "rustic" living, and broke down and got a coffee maker. Life is good at this point! I even some how managed to find time to put up lights in the caravan. Three separate switches to! I am getting better at electrical things. I have yet to burn up the caravan! On the way to Birr, I had a flat on the caravan. Acrean, one of the Morocco's, flagged me over. I never felt the caravan go flat, or the tire breaking apart, or the riding on the rim. Wilma is a strong old beast, and the springs are strong. And that is why I never felt it at all. Becky and I got up early today, in hopes to be able to see Birr Castle. But circus life never fails, plan and never do what you plan to do! We were sent to Ballysloe to give a deposit and get a key for the next tober. Lack of insurance papers, delayed us, along with lunch hour (all towns close at 1 and open at 2 for lunch) we did not get back in time to go. But we did stop along the way to see a ruin, a castle that is almost intact. Castles seem to be four stories, but the stairs in this one only went up two floors. It was still cool to see what was left, knowing that the ruins were several hundred years old. One wonders what the life was like back then, and what was it like to live in a castle like that. On the grounds of the castle were cows! Apparently, the grounds belong to a farm, but the castle is open to visitors. Now were in our second show, and ready to go take down the boards for the next town. The broken lorie is back (UN broke) and I get to drive the lorie again! I am on soon, and hope I don't break my nose again! My nose is better, and a lot of the abrasions are healing nicely. Still broke though. I am even doing full make up again! April 10, 1997 Ballinsloe 12:46 AM The weather has been a dream, but the crowds almost not here. The audience that we do have I think we got from the grave. Dead and lifeless. In fact, a funeral has more life to it! I am still in my slump. More hard times with Becky, and I have a terrible feeling it will not last long. That is the way a blowdown goes. I also thing that V has allot to do with it. We can't leave the tober without V's. Becky and I went into town today (V in hand) to get a hair cut. We casually handed out V's, knowing our proper time is around two or so. I was later asked by Tom why we did not voucher the cars, sense I was down town. I have called Bob, my old show owner, but only got his machine. I left a message though. I will call again later. But I am still wondering if I should stay or go. I really hate to have this to think about. April 13, 1997 RoseCommen 12:46 AM After long talks with Becky, and Dave the owner, It has been decided that I will go back to the states. I will be leaving in the next week. I have a job with Bob already, booking and clowning back on Hendricks. It is hard to leave, I don't like blowing a show, but if Becky and I have any future, I need to give her time to get over her past. I also need to work on my clowning more, and the style I want to do is not what the show wants. So, back to the states. I will hopefully sell the computer here, and go back an get a better computer...... April 20, 1997 Westport 12:46 AM My Final show is approaching. I am jumping on a train to Dublin at 7:30 tomorrow morning, and flying off Monday morning to Atlanta. Duffys Circus has not been a bad experience, but not all good either. I have learned, broke my nose, and handed out thousands of V. there will be things that I will miss, but I know me leaving is for the better. My adventure and journal will continue, but it is hard to believe that only 4 months ago, I was so excited about coming here, and now I can't wait to leave. Have I only disillusioned myself about what would happen here? April 21, 1997 On the Rails 12:46 AM Well, my tour of Ireland with Duffys Circus is now done. Becky dropped me off at the station, and our tears were shed. Hopefully down the road for both of us. Becky is wonderful, so full of energy and pep, making her auguste clown something special. She has a bright future in circus. And I know she will use every bit of it. My own personal tour of Ireland is now starting, but it will not be as exciting as being on a show. I change trains in Atlow, then off to Dublin, the country's capital. As I look out my window I can see a ruin of a castle, no, it is a silo. Oops. I have a day to spend in Dublin, doing anything I want. Internet coffee shop!! I wonder what interesting people I will meet on the train. I have my computer, my coffee, my cigs, now, I if I only had a radio....
12:46 AM As I changed trains in Athlow, I was talking to the conductor, and as I opened a notebook to write something the newspaper picture of Becky flew out and landed under a train. I wonder if that was an omen of sorts. I felt a sinking feeling that happened. I hope that it is not the start of a bad trip back to the states. I know that I always have street performing to fall back on. Last night after the shows, Becky and I found a field to let Bandon run in, It belonged to a farmer who was quite happy to let the dog run. The Irish are plain, simple people. But they are nice. The kids on the other hand... If I go back with Bob, I will be a carni, at least for a while. He is not sure if he is taking out the show. I will find out when I get there. If not, I will see what I can do to find a show. My hopes are that I will find a cheep truck (real cheep) and just drive onto a lot. With any luck... I also hope to sell the laptop in Doublin. I don't want to, but if I can I can almost for sure buy a truck. Here is hoping.
April 21, 1997 Dublin Airport 12:46 AM Now the long wait begins. I have had dinner, checked into going some where else in Europe, had a few drinks, got cigarettes. I have in till at least 5:30 in till I can do any thing. I am nikered, and can't wait to board the plane to England... Then home. I went into Dublin today, went to the internet Cafe, did some busing on Grafton Street, and met a fellow balloonist named Joey, we talked for a while, and I showed him a few ideas, made 35 quid, took a double Decker to the airport. What an exciting life.. Now, I think I will play a game...Wish I was playing taking a nap.. April 22, 1997 Gatwick Airport (In plane) 12:46 AM At last on my way, and I can't move. No one can! The airports, bus stations, and train stations have been called to a halt because of a bomb threat. The plane is full, and we have sat here for2 hours now on the ground. Luckily, I am in good company. The gentleman Next to me is Fran, from Doublin, who is a software inspector. We talked about the difference between our two cultures. It was really a nice discussion over coffee and scones. Last night, I also had the pleasure of Nikki Rath of Germany. twenty-two, and studying social work. Also a nice conversation about bikes, Europe, traveling, juggling, clowning, circuses, coffee, and cigs. It was nice to have a female to talk to... Now, closer to 10:00 am, we are still waiting on the plane. For sure, the whole works of getting home will be delayed concerablely. My Lack of sleep will also play a lousy role in my travel back to my homeland. But I remain hopeful..... By the way, I have looked all over for Marlboro menthol all over Ireland... I found it today- in the duty free shop on the way home..GO FIGURE!!!
April 22, 1997 Gatwick Airport, England 12:46 AM I am now in line that stretches accrossed the north terminal. I have been told that I will have a room waiting for me. The bomb scare this morning has really played havoc on the city, and airport. I am very tired, and out of energy. I have not had sleep in almost 36 hours. My feet are very tired, and I can't wait in till I can lie down for a long nap. I wish I could say more, but I am to say the least, nickered. It is scary to, knowing that some ejit made a phone call, and closed down the entire city. 12:46 AM I am still in line. I think it will be another hour or so before I can find out if and where I might have a room. I really hope so. I need some sleep, a good meal, and a shower. A pair of socks might do me good to. As I look behind me, The line stretches about 50 meters more than it did when I found the end. I have about 50 meters to go. It is unusual to here on the PA system pages for passengers from Bombay, Tebet, and etc. Also, there are several languages that I don't know where they are from. I don't think I would mind this as much if I was not as tired. Who knows? I might get bumped again tomorrow, and have a chance to see the city. This is even better then Penn Station in New York City for People watching. 12:46 AM I am Finally on my way to the hotel, supplied by the airlines. What it will be I don't know. It will be interesting to find out! Only 7.5 hours in that line, still leaving people waiting to get new reservations. Very long day. time for sleep. Soon April 23, 1997 IN THE AIR!! 12:46 AM It has been one hell of a morning. I never heard the wake up call this morning, and missed my flight to Atlanta. I had to spend 35 quid on a taxi from the hotel. And of course, the plane that I got rerouted on was late. I am going through Pittsburgh then to Atlanta, with a layover for a few hours. I am finally moving so that is a start. The hotel was nice, and the shower and bath was really nice. Been so long, that I had forgot what it was like. Might be soon that I will have to take bucket baths again. Here is hoping.. While I was waiting to board the plain, I began talking to a lady who was a boarding agent for British Air. You can tell she was bitter about the bomb yesterday, and mentioned that she had to live with it all her life. The Oklahoma bombing that happened a few years back really took our nation by shock. She said that here things like that happen ever day. Her son was close to a bomb that went off while visiting a museum. She has soon kids with their heads blown off; innocent kids and babies shot to death, As well as people who have had their entire family Killed. I can not imagine living life like that. What a hell it must be to have to live the decisions that a government made hundreds of years ago, and to suffer the recoil from others. 12:46 AM Moral obligations? What are they, and what do we have to do? The young lady sitting next to me is asking me this, a student in London studying diplomacy. Interesting what things interest people to what career they might like. Give me the vagabond life any day. Something about the uncertainty of what I will be doing day to day. Or the feeling of being with a circus... Knowing that you belong to something. Circus is definitely a great institution all over the world. I wish that I had time and the money (more money than anything else) to be able to go and see another show some where. But I would not have had any money at all to leave the country if I had. Next time!
Thursday, April 24, 1997 Atlanta Airport 12:46 AM I am now stuck in Atlanta. No place to exchange currency, not enough American money to get a hotel room, and my baggage is locked up some where if it is even here. British Airways does not open in till 11:00 am. You could say I am pissed. Goodnight Friday, April 25, 1997 Atlanta, Ga. Red Roof Inn 12:46 AM I have decided to go back to Bob's. At least for the time being. Coming home has been really expensive, and I figure it would be my best bet. To sum things up, I spent the night at the airport, and the next morning British Airways gave me $75.00 for clothing and necessities. I found a room and was able to check in early, and the staff here has been wonderful. My luggage finally came in round 7:00 and all is well. One last run into Easly, and I am all set. I can look for a show at Bob's. It really feels really good to be back in the states! There are so many little things that you forget you have here in the states. Time to pack up to go!
Friday, April 25, 1997 Ihop Restraint, Atlanta 12:46 AM My travels from Europe are almost at an end. I have one last train ride left, and back to Winter Quarters of Childress shows, and Hendricks Brothers Circus. I don't know when or if Bob will be taking out the show this year, but I have a job with Bob, any time I want it. Bob is circus, and when your circus, you have a family whereever you go. Really nice of Bob to put me up. Can't wait to see what I will be. 12:46 AM On the train. Only about 40 minutes to go! I will be in Greenville SC, then only 45 minutes to Easley. I had a chance to talk to an interesting lady who has worked for Amtrak for over 27 years. Ms Lucille Brown, of Gainesville, GA. She is 43, and been interested in trains all of her life. Short, fat, and toothless, but a happy go lucky person. Saturday, October 03, 1998 Cuba, MO
The ending….. Shortly after I got to Wisconsin, I had my computer stolen on Mid American Amusements. It had been a long season on the carnival, and I did every thing. I ran rides, to cooking, to booking, and every thing in between. I got BK's old truck, and now that is with me for the 1998 season. I learned a lot in 1997. I learned a lot about my self, and who I am. And now that it is close to the end of the '98 season, I still carry what I learned with me… now and for ever.. The circus is great. It is one of the few jobs that I have had that I know that I can enjoy with my heart, cause it is my heart that keeps me the clown that I am still learning to be. |
